It's now into July and we've had some continue chilly days but also have a few warm ones. It took the warm days to get the garden growing. There is space though so I am planting some sunflowers today and some more spinach. Fresh garden greens are great. The potatos are about hip high, we've eaten the lettuce greens several times for dinner, and the tall phlox, irises, lupines and daisies are blooming.
The freshly tilled areas seem to get our cats 'visiting' them.
We did some shrub trimming today. The hedge, which belongs to our neighbors (rentors) is out of control. It'd be nice to have wild land and bigger property size but for living in town we have worked a lot on shaping what are land looks like. Lots of shade perennials in the front.
The large orange poppies have had their show. The raspberries are on their way.
We frequently have monarchs and other butterfly visitors. It will be time for a campfire in the back yard again this weekend with the nice weather. Marshallows under a starlit summer eve. Purdy good.

5/26/09 Post Memorial Day
Memorial Day weekend has passed. Monday was much cooler than Sat & Sun but overall the weather is pretty darn nice. More veggies and flower seeds have been planted. Farmer's Market are opening. I want to go to at least 6 different markets this summer. Meanwhile, from my yard I hope to pick spinach, lettuce, brussel sprouts, peas, tomatos, carrots, beets and potatos. My favorite flowers are cosmo and I planted some of those and nasturium. I got some clipping for Chinese Lantern so I will see how that does. Once the weather is above 60 more things with start growing better.
The cats were outside today and brought 'presents' back. Elmo brought a shrew. This was the 3rd one this weekend and Kelsie brought a young rabbit. The rabbit still was ok just a bit stressed out. The wren warbles and warbles all day long. It's very fun to listen to and watch it bounce a round. Our bikes are ready to go for rides. We have the Munger Trail in town that goes south and also the Lakewalk in town which isn't bad. Plus, there is always just hopping on the bikes heading down residential streets heading north. Emily's Eatery is one of our target stops to bike to this summer. It's in Knife River about 12 or so miles from here.
In our backyard, the cars in their parking spots have the best sun. My neighbhor says my windshield wipers wear out so fast because of being in the sun. We plants some pine and birch trees during our first summer here. The pines are now almost 6 feet and the birch shot up to about 7 and 10 feet with not much lateral branching - just going up and up. They will provide some shade in time.
We don't have much grass in the front or back yard but it sure tries to sneak back in. Grass, dandelions and a few weeds pop in our wood chip paths. My knees are a bit sore from getting down to remove some. I will wait until after a rain to pull more. I love the symbolism of gardens. Grow. Plant. Plant and grow plants. Plant and grow dreams and ideas. Plant and grow friends. Plant and grow education. Plant and grow businesses. Maybe I am an entrepreneur. I'm thankful that I've had some good amount of time at home and have been able to create some work within traditional music, art, and history. Video skills are my latest round of learning. There are endless topics. Last summer I filmed - my garden. The plants swayed in the wind and almost danced. The heavier flower heads bopped around. The bleeding hearts jiggled. The shasta daisies shimmied. Very fun if the plants could sing. Meanwhile, the birds readily spill out their songs. We're a little too dry for hearing frogs right close by. Nature is definitely a theater of sorts. Sit out on a bench and listen, smell, and enjoy.

May 22 - First Planting
It's Memorial Day weekend today and yesterday we spent more time in the garden preparing the soil. We purchased some Garden Green compost, made locally, and added it to the soil. We planted purple carrots, spinach, and beets. Today the potatos and peas will go in. Some people already have planted these but in Lakeside the temperatures are still on the cool side. Warmer weather is coming. This is my first post so I will keep it short.
